Superuser mode in SENET Boot is used when persistent changes to an image are required. Whenever you need to update the E-launcher, install additional software, apply Windows updates, modify Windows settings, edit the registry, or perform other system-level tasks, these actions must be carried out in superuser mode. Also, game updates that are not handled by SENET Game Update are also updated using superuser mode.
In superuser mode, all changes are stored in a writeback. Unlike a normal boot, the writeback is not cleared on reboot and can be explicitly saved into a drive image, ensuring that the changes persist across restarts.
During a normal boot, any changes are temporary and cannot be saved. Superuser mode is the only mode that allows writebacks to be committed permanently.
Since workstations use a shared image, there is no need to apply the same changes on every PC individually, unless very specific settings are needed. It is sufficient to make and save the required changes on one client PC. After restarting the remaining workstations that use the same image, all updates and settings will be applied automatically.
Game Update Feature
For games distributed through Steam and Epic Games Store (EGS), SENET provides a dedicated Game Update feature. This is the recommended way to manage and apply game updates on these platforms.
Superuser mode can still be used if required, but for Steam and EGS titles, the Game Update feature is generally faster, simpler, and easier to maintain.
Managing Superuser mode
Please note, that only one superuser session can be launched in the gaming venue. If the venue already has an active superuser session, when you select another PC, the command will be displayed, but you will face an error trying to click on it.
1. Starting Superuser session
SENET Boot Admin panel
To start the superuser mode, click on the icon in the field of the selected PC. The PC must be turned off.
CAP - Venue's map
Start superuser using the command Enable superuser mode for the image/drive update. The PC must be turned off.
Only employees with the activated right to SENET Boot management have access to this command.
After running the command in the dialog box, you will need to select where exactly you want to add changes. In general, you can add changes to content drives and to the image itself. Those drives/images, that are entered in the SENET Boot settings, will be available for display in this window.
In context of superuser feature:
Content drive — stores games and applications available to clients
Image drive — stores bootable OS images used by all client PCs
⚠️ Important! In new versions of SENET Boot when starting a superuser session on content drive, it becomes unavailable for all other PCs until changes are saved.
After selecting drives/images, click the Enable mode button. After that, you can safely make various changes.
2. Saving changes
⚠️ Important! When using the Game Update feature, you must not make manual changes to the content drive. Any such changes will not be recognized by Game Update and will be overwritten during the next update process.
To save the entered data, you need to click on the superuser mode deactivation icon in the local SENET Boot Admin panel. If you perform the actions in CAP you need to reclick on the venue map on the PC, where the superuser mode is launched, and run the command “Turn off superuser mode for the image/disk update”.
The dialog box which opens will display the drives/ images, that were selected initially. You need to confirm in which drives or images you want to save the settings and click Save. Also, you can disable superuser mode without saving changes.
⚠️ Important!
Any changes must be made to a snapshot, not directly to the image, especially if there are active PCs.
Changes saved to a snapshot do not affect PCs that are currently active and will be applied only after a reboot.
If changes are made directly to a content drive, it becomes unavailable to all connected PCs and all active connections will be dropped.
The process and status of writing new data to the image or the drive will be displayed in the History of updates.
After the successful completion of the process, all changes will be saved automatically on the server. If a failure occurs during recording, the information will not be saved, and you need to do the entire procedure again.
